I must say that I recently came across a real inspiring story that compelled me to share this blog post. The story was on Yahoo Makers about how knitting saved a homeless man’s life. This is not your typical story, because the subject is a man that used to be homeless and now makes a living knitting teddy bears and sharing his story through his blog and self published books.
The story is entitled: Knitting Literally Turns Homeless Man’s Life Around and is written by: Jessica Harlan, who is an extraordinary writer. I literally had tears in my eyes after reading the story. I was deeply moved at how this once homeless man, Gregory Patrick, changed his life around by one stitch at at time.
The great thing about this story is that Gregory Patrick has managed to do something that so many people wish they could accomplish, but never can get out of their own way. When he was rock bottom on the streets homeless, he learned how to knit and raised funds to buy food. Instead of asking for a handout, he took matters into his own hands and did something about it.
I am inspired and encouraged by this story. Not only did Gregory make a living knitting, he started to write books that he sells online through his website: Mad Man Knitting, which is a FREE hosted wordpress.com website that someone helped him start several years ago. The site is wonderful, I suggest that you read it and consider buying his book or one his products. He is not asking for handouts anymore, but is actively taking charge and full control of his life.
Kudo’s to you Gregory Patrick! Your story is inspiring. I am totally impressed with your tenacity, courage and determination to make things work for yourself. You can’t keep a good person down if they are determined to succeed. I wish you much success and look forward to seeing your movie come out. This is definitely movie material about your life and how your “knitted bears” helped a homeless man get off the streets. Congratulations.
