Congratulations Garth Hallberg on your book City of Fire. I just watched the trailer for the book and love it. Great job on putting everything together so splendidly. It is rare that a first novel gets such attention and fanfare from the publishing community. It goes without saying that your book has reached a success that many often only dream of, receiving an advance in excess of $1 million. In addition to writing such a stellar book, you received an advance of $2 million for your book. Bravo on your success.
Brilliant job on choosing such a great place for your story line New York City in the 1970’s. It was a glorious time in the 70’s and New York City is always a fascinating place to read about and to visit. Kudo’s on giving the readers intrigue and mystery into the life of a wealthy family and all of the behind the scenes drama into their messed up lives. Your strong supporting characters, the magazine reporter and the detective help round out the story and make City of Fire a must read novel. I can definitely see this book being the basis of a tv show with a cult following such as The Wire, Mad Men or Breaking Bad. It definitely has the illustrious trappings of being made into a feature film like Bon Fire of The Vanities or American Hustle. The book really is a great foundation for a script either tv or movie. Success is written in the stars for this book.
The photo by world renowned photographer Miller Mobley may be why I see even greater things in store for this talented author. The Miller Mobley photograph of Garth with the New York in the background is right of Hollywood. In that one photograph, Miller Mobley morphs Garth Risk Hallberg into a Hollywood star that is a powerhouse. This is no disrespect to the talented author, but the Miller Mobley photograph makes him look powerful and deserving of stardom. As they say: “A picture is a thousand words”.
It is important for all writers and aspiring writers to understand that they must never give up on their dreams. It is important to write and explore meaningful dialogue and stories in your writing. Don’t be afraid of rejection. There is always someone out there willing to buy your books and to read your stories.
Dare to Dream and Believe in Yourself. Hats off to you Garth Risk Hallberg for believing in your destiny. The following quote by you is so inspiring. You are well on your way to accomplishing your goal:
“My goal,” he says, “was to get the book somewhere that is going to allow me to be DeLillo 40 years from now.” – Garth Risk Hallberg
